Step by step guide
Step Number1

Select your canvas or canvases, purchase your Valspar spray paints and seek inspiration! You may wish to try the modern art section of your local library for ideas (some very expensive modern paintings are surprisingly simple to re-create).

Step Number2

Alternatively, you may prefer to experiment with the Poppy design shown overleaf. To begin, draw the outline of the shape very lightly on the canvas (or canvases).

Step Number3

Once you have drawn your outline, create a mask of the shape required by cutting out self-adhesive plastic to the correct shape. Keep the shape simple for maximum effect. For the Poppy design, mask out the white areas around the edge.

Step Number4

Make sure there are no gaps in the mask. Also, be gentle when cutting the mask to avoid cutting through the canvas. Use newspaper underneath the canvas to protect the surrounding area when spraying.

Step Number5

Once masked, spray Satin Real Red to cover the complete area. Wait 10 minutes.

Step Number6

Then spray Satin Wine Red in a circle around the middle. This is done freehand to give soft edges, so practice circles on a piece of newspaper first. Wait 10 minutes.

Step Number7

Then spray the inner circle using Gloss Orange. Again, practice circles on a piece of newspaper.

Step Number8

Remove mask after image is completely dry, allow 45 minutes.

Step Number9

Cut out a stencil for the stem and the center of the poppy, use loose masking by holding the cut out stencils about 1 inch above the canvas while spraying Flat Black. This will give soft edges and protect your picture. Again practice this first.
